JIC and AN fittings explained

So what the heck is an AN/JIC fitting? These fittings were originally developed for the military which is what the AN stands for. Army/Navy. JIC stands for Joint International Council who sets the standards for various types of fittings. JIC fittings are very common in industrial hydraulic applications and even most aftermarket performance fuel and brake systems.

JIC fittings are distinguished by a 37 degree flare and are designed to be reused over and over again while maintaining a very high strength, high pressure seal. Do not confuse these with what you will commonly see in hardware stores. There is a similar fitting that uses a 45 degree flare and mostly used for gas connections such as propane or natural gas. These are referred to as SAE.  SAE and JIC are not compatible.

Ok, sizing.  JIC fittings are sized in 1/16th of an inch. So assuming you still remember some basic math, that means that a #4 JIC is equivalent to 1/4".  #8 is equal to 8/16ths, or reduced to 1/2". Trick question. What size is a #5?
